WHAT WE EXPECT OF OUR STUDENTS
At Maggie Flanigan Studio, we believe in the actor as artist.
We are not interested in shortcuts, tricks, or superficial approaches to the work. We are committed to the development of serious actors and artists. The standards we maintain are non-negotiable. They are rooted in professionalism, self-discipline, accountability, and artistry. They are the foundation necessary to achieve meaningful artistic growth.
The actors who thrive here share certain qualities.
They love acting. They want to actually be taught. They are searching for seriousness and artistic rigor. They understand that technique and craft are vital to the artist. They want an artistic home, and they want to be surrounded by like minded creatives.
They are interested in human behavior. They observe people. They ask questions. They remain open to new ideas, new experiences, and new ways of seeing the world.
They understand that growth requires consistency. They arrive on time. They are prepared. They honor their commitments to themselves, their classmates, and the work.
They are willing to fail, and are open to constructive criticism.
Artistic growth requires risk. Students must be willing to step outside their comfort zone, make mistakes, and confront the limitations that are holding them back. Perfection is not the goal. Growth is.
They are emotionally courageous.
The work asks actors to explore the full range of human experience. Joy. Fear. Shame. Anger. Grief. Embarrassment. Humiliation. Students are expected to engage this work honestly and responsibly.
Acting is not a solitary art form. We expect students to contribute to a professional, supportive environment where trust, generosity, and mutual respect are valued.
Our faculty will guide, challenge, support, and teach. But no teacher can do the work for you. The actors who make the greatest progress are those who take ownership of their training.
They value process over results.
Most actors become preoccupied with outcomes: booking jobs, getting representation, receiving approval. While these things have their place, our focus is the work itself. Great acting is built through disciplined attention to detail.
They develop and protect their instrument.
The actor's instrument is their entirety, their body, voice, emotional temperament, and imagination. A serious actor works to master it.
They are committed to excellence. Not perfection. Excellence.
Excellence is a willingness to continually raise your standards, deepen your craft, and pursue the work with integrity.
Maggie Flanigan Studio is not built for everyone.
It is built for actors who want to train seriously, work honestly, and develop the discipline, imagination, and humanity required for a life in the arts.
If that describes you, we look forward to meeting you. If it doesn't there are many other places to train.
