Self-Care for Actors

An actor's greatest instrument is not their voice or their body. It is their inner life.

"You cannot separate the artist from the human being. The healthier the human being, the more truthful and available the artist becomes."
— Charlie Sandlan

A professional acting career places extraordinary demands on that instrument. Auditions. Rejection. Long periods of uncertainty. Emotional vulnerability. Constant evaluation. These experiences are not occasional—they are an inevitable part of the profession.

At Maggie Flanigan Studio, we believe developing the actor's instrument also means learning how to care for it.

Self-Care for Actors is designed to help students develop the resilience, perspective, and emotional awareness necessary to sustain a healthy, creative life while pursuing one of the world's most demanding professions.

Caring for the Artist

Actors dedicate years to developing their voice, body, imagination, and craft.

Far fewer are taught how to care for themselves while navigating a profession built upon uncertainty, rejection, competition, and vulnerability.

Taught by a licensed psychologist who specializes in working with actors, this course explores the unique psychological demands of an artistic career and provides practical tools for maintaining emotional health, creative energy, and professional resilience.

Students develop a deeper understanding of how the mind and body respond to stress, opportunity, disappointment, and success, while learning healthy strategies for sustaining both their artistry and their well-being.

Building Resilience

Every actor experiences setbacks.

Not every actor learns how to recover from them.

This course helps students develop practical skills for navigating the emotional realities of a professional acting career, including:

  • Building resilience in the face of rejection

  • Managing stress and uncertainty

  • Recognizing unhelpful patterns of thinking

  • Strengthening confidence without relying on external validation

  • Maintaining motivation during periods of inactivity

  • Developing healthier responses to disappointment

  • Cultivating optimism, perspective, and emotional flexibility

The goal is not to eliminate adversity.

The goal is to meet adversity with greater awareness, courage, and resilience.

A Sustainable Creative Life

A successful acting career is measured in decades, not months.

Longevity requires more than talent.

It requires emotional intelligence, self-awareness, discipline, perspective, and the ability to continue creating meaningful work through both success and disappointment.

This course provides actors with practical tools to build a sustainable creative life—one that supports not only professional achievement but personal fulfillment.

The Complete Artist

At Maggie Flanigan Studio, conservatory training extends beyond technique.

A complete actor develops physical freedom, vocal expression, imagination, discipline, artistic literacy, collaborative skill, and the emotional resilience necessary to sustain a demanding creative life.

Self-Care for Actors reflects our belief that caring for yourself is not separate from your artistry.

It is part of your artistry.

Because the goal is not simply to build a career.

It is to build a life that allows you to continue creating meaningful work for decades to come.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS

“I was placed in the intense reigns of Charlie Sandlan.  I became a better artist, actor, friend, sibling and daughter because of the studio. Even now, I crave the studio every day. What I learned is present in my work every day. I truly believe in everything they stand for.”

Maggie taught me that I could control my work, my acting, and to throw all of the bullshit out that I had in my head about ‘what I should be doing’ and to just listen and respond honestly, in the moment. She gave me a craft. She is, quite simply put, THE BEST.”
