Nairoby Otero is an award-winning actor, playwright, producer, and educator whose work is rooted in the belief that artists have both the privilege and responsibility of telling meaningful stories. As a first-generation Cuban American artist, she has built a career creating original work that explores identity, culture, and the complexity of the human experience. At the Maggie Flanigan Studio, Nairoby teaches Devised Work, guiding serious actors through the collaborative process of creating original performance while developing their unique artistic voice.

Philosophy

At the Maggie Flanigan Studio, we believe actors should not only interpret great writing—they should also cultivate the ability to generate original work. Creating your own material develops artistic independence, strengthens your imagination, and deepens your understanding of storytelling from the inside out.

Nairoby's classroom is a rigorous, collaborative environment where curiosity, discipline, and fearless imagination are equally valued. Through storytelling, improvisation, movement, writing, and ensemble creation, students learn to trust their creative instincts while embracing risk as an essential part of the artistic process. Rather than waiting for opportunities, actors are challenged to become creators—developing original work that reflects their unique perspective, expands their artistic voice, and contributes meaningfully to the larger cultural conversation.

The Maggie Flanigan Studio is the leading acting studio in New York City where professional actors train for long careers. The acting programs at the drama school are based on the Meisner Technique and the work of Sanford Meisner. The two year acting program includes acting classes, movement classes, voice and speech for actors, commercial acting classes, on camera classes, cold reading, monologue, playwriting, script analysis and the Meisner Summer Intensive.

Education & Training

Nairoby earned her MFA in Acting from Brooklyn College and her BA in Theatre Performance from Marymount Manhattan College. Her artistic work has been recognized with the Shubert Foundation Scholarship, the Denis Diderot Artist Grant at the Château d'Orquevaux Artist Residency in France, the TOW International Research Fellowship, and Brooklyn College's Best of Brooklyn honor. She is a member of SAG-AFTRA, Actors' Equity Association, The Dramatists Guild, New York Women in Film & Television, and The Players Club.

Experience

As both a performer and creator, Nairoby has appeared at The Public Theater, Ensemble Studio Theatre, The Drama League, Repertorio Español, IATI Theater, Southern Rep Theatre, GableStage, the Los Angeles LGBT Center, and on NBC's Law & Order: Organized Crime. She is the founder of YOLO! Productions, an award-winning company recognized for immersive, site-specific theatre and socially engaged storytelling.

Her critically acclaimed solo play, 'Til Sunday, has been presented nationally and received a nomination for Best Solo Performance. Her short film, A Second Embrace, screened at numerous Academy Award®, BAFTA, and Canadian Screen Award qualifying festivals. She is currently developing her second solo work, UNROOTED, inspired by research in Cuba exploring family history, migration, and identity.

Alongside her professional work, Nairoby has taught Acting I and Acting II at Suffolk County Community College, served as a guest lecturer at Marymount Manhattan College, taught playwriting and devised theatre through The Drama League, and coached actors privately for more than a decade. Her experience as both an educator and working artist allows her to bridge the gap between rigorous training and the realities of creating original work professionally.
