Self-Care for Actors

Navigating the Psychological Impact of Rejection & Creative Struggle

Dr. Alexa Ispas is a psychologist, author, educator, and internationally recognized specialist in the psychology of actors. Her work is dedicated to helping performers navigate the unique psychological demands of a creative career, providing practical tools that strengthen resilience, confidence, and long-term artistic well-being.

As the author of the acclaimed Psychology for Actors six-book series, Alexa has helped more than 20,000 actors worldwide develop a healthier relationship with rejection, uncertainty, performance pressure, and the emotional realities of pursuing a professional acting career.

At Maggie Flanigan Studio, Alexa's work reflects a belief shared throughout the conservatory: the actor's inner life is one of their greatest artistic assets. By helping students better understand themselves, they become more available to their craft, their collaborators, and ultimately the stories they are called to tell.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS

“I was placed in the intense reigns of Charlie Sandlan.  I became a better artist, actor, friend, sibling and daughter because of the studio. Even now, I crave the studio every day. What I learned is present in my work every day. I truly believe in everything they stand for.”

Maggie taught me that I could control my work, my acting, and to throw all of the bullshit out that I had in my head about ‘what I should be doing’ and to just listen and respond honestly, in the moment. She gave me a craft. She is, quite simply put, THE BEST.”

Maggie Flanigan taught me the true meaning of artistry, passion, and professionalism. I am certain that I continue to work as an actress because of my training with Maggie. At every audition and every performance, her guiding voice is with me. It is a gift beyond measure.”

PHILOSOPHY

Actors willingly choose one of the most psychologically demanding professions in the world.

Every audition asks you to be vulnerable. Every rehearsal asks you to take risks. Every performance invites evaluation.

Periods of extraordinary opportunity are often followed by periods of uncertainty, rejection, and self-doubt. These experiences are not signs that something is wrong with you. They are part of the profession.

My goal is to help actors understand these experiences with greater clarity so they can spend less time fighting themselves and more time investing their energy where it belongs—in their work.

My teaching is grounded in practical, evidence-based strategies that actors can immediately apply to auditions, rehearsals, performances, and everyday life. Whether the challenge is overthinking, perfectionism, self-criticism, rejection, anxiety, or uncertainty, I strive to help students develop greater self-awareness, emotional flexibility, and resilience.

At Maggie Flanigan Studio, I believe psychological well-being is not separate from artistic development. It is one of the foundations that supports it. When actors develop the capacity to care for themselves while remaining open, courageous, and curious, they become more truthful, more available, and more capable of sustaining meaningful artistic work throughout a lifetime.

My hope is that every student leaves with not only practical tools for navigating this profession, but with greater confidence in their ability to meet its challenges with resilience, perspective, and humanity.
