Why Actors Need to Commit to Acting Programs: Jamie Butler

Acting programs at the Maggie Flanigan Studio prepare actors for long careers by providing professional acting classes and acting training based on the teaching of Sanford Meisner and the Meisner technique. In this interview, Jamie Butler, a studio alumni, discusses why actors need to commit to professional training.

Q: What would you say to someone that thinks they do not need to train to be an actor?

A: Training is so important. You need to know how to work as an actor. Often times we think that we know what we’re doing or we know how to do it. But when you start to train, you realize, “I really don’t know how to do this.” You need to know how to work professionally on set. You need to know how to work professionally with your directors, with your fellow actors. You need tools to show you how to act.

It’s not just coming up with emotion and saying, “I’m just going to do this part and just go out there and do it because I think I know how to.” No there’s so much more that goes into it, that goes into a character or that just goes into acting. Period. I would say you’re foolish if you think that you don’t need training. You absolutely need to train. You need to know how to work and your training is also going to give you endurance.

You are foolish if you think that you don’t need training. Training sets the professional actor apart from the actor that's just up there acting just to act.

It’s going to give you longevity in the business because you need to know what you’re doing, how to do it. You need to be able to have a routine and you know how to work. That’s what’s going to sustain you in this business, is knowing how to work. If you don’t know how to work as a professional actor, you’re just hitting and missing. There’s no structure, you need structure. You need the tools to be able to, if Broadway is your goal, be able to do eight shows a week.

You need to know what that takes. It takes stamina, it takes passion, it takes endurance, it takes education, it takes understanding, it takes knowledge. There’s so much that goes into it, so much homework that goes into it. Yes, it looks easy on the screen or on stage but that training is what sets you apart. Training sets the professional actor apart from the actor that’s just up there willy-nilly just up there just acting just to act.

Q: What is the number one reason to study at Maggie Flanigan Studio instead of anywhere else?

A: The number one reason to study here in Maggie Flanigan Studio, it is definitely the best training, the best studio and acting programs that you could ever embark upon. The professionalism, the level of training, the intensity, the expectations that you set for yourself that the teachers set for you, understanding that this is a place where you’re going to get better, you’re going to be better as an actor. It has a lot to do with the standard that Charlie has set, I’m being honest.

It has a lot to do with that because he’s not going to spoon feed it to you, he’s not going to give it to you, you’re going to work really hard. If you’re willing to work hard, if you’re willing to put in the time, energy, and effort, you will be the best. When I speak to people and they ask me where I train, they always say, “Maggie’s is the best.” It has a standard. There was a screenwriter that I spoke with and he said that when students or actors would come in to audition, the actors that would blow them away, the one thing that they had in common, they will look on their resume and they would see Maggie Flanigan.

You’re not going to find a more nurturing environment, a more professional environment, an environment that speaks to you and helps you develop as an actor and as a person and it’s genuine. It’s really genuine, the dedication to you as the holistic actor, the holistic person and you need that. That’s why I’m here, that’s why I’m staying, that’s why I’m finishing. There’s no other place for me. I know this. There’s no other place, so yes, that’s why.
