For students currently attending college, the work done in the Summer Acting Intensive pays huge dividends when they return the next semester. For professional actors, this program serves as a serious tune-up, as they prepare for the fall season of auditioning or prep for a new role. This program includes all of the exercises and work required in the first semester of our two year conservatory program, but condenses it down into an intense six weeks of challenging, but rewarding work.

Our Meisner Intensive is an extraordinary experience for those looking to do something substantial with their summer break. If you are not located in New York City, the Maggie Flanigan Studio can put you in touch with websites and organizations that provide summer sublets and rentals. Our Summer Intensive students have always found it easy to locate a safe comfortable place to land during this six week program.

Who Should Consider the Six Week Meisner Summer Intensive?

It’s rare to find a comprehensive six week acting program, especially one that runs in the summer months. But, at Maggie Flanigan Studio we have discovered that summer is the perfect time to dive more deeply into Meisner acting methods.

Many of our summer intensive students are pursuing their BA or BFA in universities around the country or are international actors seeking a serious introduction to Meisner training. The program is also great for professional working actors from NYC or LA who are curious about the Meisner Technique, but want to explore more before making a full commitment to Meisner Training. Any serious actor knows you cannot expect to learn the craft of acting in just six weeks. At the same time, this Meisner summer intensive is an efficient way to gain a deeper understanding of the artistry, hard work and fundamentals that go into Meisner training.

Why Should Actors from Washington Heights NY Study the Meisner Technique?

The basis of Meisner Technique is allowing actors to learn, through intentional exercises, how to rely on and focus on any other actors involved in a production or experience. Nothing can ruin a performance more than self awareness. The Meisner technique was developed by Sanford Meisner after he began working with a method developed by Konstantin Stanislavsky, famous for creating Method Acting. The program is about listening intently to other actors and responding in ways that are grounded in authentic human behavior and emotional responses.

Entering into the Two Year Acting Program

Many Summer Conservatory students make the decision to enroll in our Two-Year Professional Actor Training Program. After spending the summer with us, and discovering the brilliance of Sanford Meisner’s technique, they find it hard to walk away from what was accomplished in just six weeks. The great advantage these students have is the opportunity to repeat the first third of the Meisner Technique in Acting 1. Having navigated the early fears and frustrations that come with learning something new, summer students approach the fall semester without those issues and are often the leaders of their class. Also, having completed Movement 1 and Voice 1 in the summer has allowed their vulnerability and sensitivity to operate with greater ease. They start First Year in Movement 2 and Voice 2. Their ability to physically and vocally process the deep experiences that come in Acting 1, make it possible to create vivid and interesting human behavior, their talent flourishing as craft continues to solidify within them. The Six-Week Summer Intensive is certainly not a requirement to begin our two-year conservatory program, but those that have seen some of the most profound growth.

Summer Conservatory students who continue on into First Year have their registration fee waived, and get priority in selecting fall class times. Summer students who cannot immediately continue into the two-year program because they need to finish their undergraduate degree, or need time to make the big move to NYC, will not need to reapply. Summer students have a standing acceptance into the Maggie Flanigan Studio when they are ready. Maggie and Charlie consider the studio to be an artistic home for all of our students.
