Meisner Acting Only Program

The Meisner Acting Only program at Maggie Flanigan Studio lays the foundation needed to approach acting with a deep understanding of the artistry involved, and how to craft a role. The studio’s professional actor training program is a two-year conservatory that trains the acting student in all aspects of the craft and guides them in developing the life skills needed to pursue an acting career.

Acting 1 and Acting 2 comprise this option, immersing the student in the full Meisner training offered in the two-year conservatory program. Classes follow the same progression of exercises and training needed to train in the Meisner technique and you study it under the direction of some of the most talented master teachers in the U.S.

Some prospective students who apply to our acting programs are curious, searching for something that will allow them to explore a dream they’ve had, perhaps since childhood, of becoming an actor. Others have recently moved to NYC, applying to our programs after receiving their BA or BFA, recognizing that their training is far from complete. We also have students enroll who have pursued other professional careers, internationally or in the U.S., and have decided that life is too short to postpone their dream of becoming a professional actor. NYC is one of the greatest cities in the world, and one of the best places to train as an actor.

Many acting students cobble together a hodge-podge of acting classes. They attend workshops or take scene study, film acting, or improv courses. They come away from these experiences with an awareness that their training lacks consistency, and they do not possess a reliable technique that will serve them in any situation. Meisner acting programs, especially the Meisner Acting Only at Maggie Flanigan Studio, gives students what has eluded them so far, a reliable technique and a consistent way of working.

Acting students who enroll in this acting program must be prepared to work hard, put assumptions aside, and have the courage to become vulnerable. If they can do these things, they can build the necessary foundation and technique required to master the craft of acting.

Meisner Acting Only: Year 1

We understand that not all students believe, at first, that a minimum of two years of study is necessary to become a serious actor. Unsure of their level of commitment, the two-year conservatory program is a lot to consider. For these students, any acting class is a gigantic step, one that requires a leap of faith. The Acting Only program is designed specifically for this kind of student.

Acting Only, Year 1 is structured the same as Acting 1 in the conservatory program, but only requires six hours of classroom time per week. This course still covers all the fundamentals of Meisner, beginning with an overview of the Meisner technique, the repetition exercises, and eventually, the application of Meisner to scene study and role development. In conservatory training, many different elements that relate to the actor’s instrument are worked on and applied. This includes Voice, Movement, Script Analysis, and more. The less experienced actor may not grasp why studying all aspects of acting are necessary until they begin Acting Only training.

Actors enroll in this series of courses passionate about beginning the journey toward becoming a serious actor. As you progresses, it becomes clear that the path to mastery isn’t fast or easy. It takes hard work, dedication, and many years to master the craft. The Acting Only option, however, is an excellent first step. At any time, students in Acting Only can sign up for auxiliary courses whenever their schedule, financial capacity, and interests align. In the Acting Only program, auxiliary courses available as add-ons include Voice 1 or 2, Movement 1 or 2, Theater History, Film History, Nutrition, and Commercial Acting 1.

Meisner Acting Only: Year 2

Year 2 of the Meisner Acting Only series requires the same intense commitment expected in Acting 2, the second year of conservatory training. This course is led by Executive Director and Head of Acting Charlie Sandlan. The focus is on applying what has been learned in Year 1 to scene study, role, and character. Students gain the tools necessary to interpret a script, make choices, and behave in a way that illuminates what the playwright/screenwriter has envisioned. It is incredibly challenging work and very personal work.

Ultimately, this portion of Meisner training is best studied as part of the full conservatory training.

MFA programs do not allow actors to train solely in acting classes because intelligent, thoughtful artists must study a broad range of disciplines and subjects. Acting Only students at Maggie Flanigan Studio will recognize early on that classmates from the Professional Actor Training Program (PATP) or Core Program are advancing more quickly. They show tremendous growth in creativity, vulnerability, and possess a vocal and physical presence. While the PATP program deepens the work done in Acting Only, the studio understands that serious artists come from many different backgrounds and that you may need to follow a unique path. For that reason, the Acting Only Year 2 is offered for Acting Only: Year 1 students and other serious actors who need the freedom to curate their training and work at their own pace.

As long as a student is committed to continuously putting in the hard work and discipline that is necessary, in and out of class, the Meisner Acting Only series at Maggie Flanigan Studio can serve as your creative home.
