Rich Rand

Mask and Character Development Teacher

Education

Rich Rand began his professional career as a street performer on Fisherman’s Wharf and went on to tour Europe, performing for tens of thousands, with his troupe of lovable clowns. He subsequently performed on and off Broadway, and in theaters throughout the United States, Europe and Canada. He has acted, directed, or choreographed 150+ productions and served as a resident artist at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore, University of Minnesota/Guthrie BFA Conservatory, University of Missouri-Kansas City, FSU/Asolo Conservatory, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Denver Center, Brandeis University, The College of William and Mary, Centre College, University of Rochester, Berea College, Franklin College, Southern Illinois University, Wagner College, and the Indianapolis Children’s Museum.

Experience

His fiction and scholarly work has been published in Baseball Monologues and More Monologues for Men by Men, Hopewell Journal: New Work by Indiana’s Best Writers, Sycamore Review, and most recently, Routledge Companion to Commedia dell’Arte, and the second edition of Movement for Actors by Allworth Press. Rich continues to act, direct, and write, but he is – first and foremost – a teacher, specializing in the integration of acting and characterization. At Purdue University, he teaches character, mask, commedia dell’arte, clowning, stage combat, and beginning and advanced acting.

Rich has received numerous teaching awards and frequently lectures on empathy, character, and teaching. He has served as Chair of Purdue Theater, President of the Association of Theater Movement Educators, and is currently the undergraduate theater coordinator at Purdue University.
