Why are Business Classes important for the professional actor from New York NY?

At Maggie Flanigan Studio, we believe that any serious actor must excel as an artist, but they must also function as a small business. The expectations placed upon professional actors are tremendous. In the first five years, they are expected to get themselves into a market that has acting opportunities, get professional headshots done, take classes, or get coaching, audition regularly, the list goes on. How does an actor prioritize where to invest their time and money? Too often, actors arrive in LA or New York undertrained and unprepared for life as an actor. They struggle to find paid acting jobs, don’t take audition or business classes, and then they wonder why they can’t find work.

Becoming a working actor can be a frustrating and somewhat lonely process. If you don’t craft a plan and implement a schedule, you might struggle. Our Business Classes for Actors guides students in developing a strategic plan based on both realistic and visionary goals. Classes cover all of the most critical aspects of establishing a career. Students explore topics such as living with an erratic income, assessing union versus non-union opportunities, identifying casting decision-makers, how to work with an audition script, and how to create a community of like-minded artists for support and networking.

Without professional training in these pragmatic but essential aspects of the business, even the most talented actor can falter. Pursuing a career in acting requires discipline, commitment, and serious training. That remains the focus of our professional preparation courses, including Business For Actors.
